2019 Lower Wisconsin Scan da Avians Summary

So this year, just when we were feeling good about remembering all of our camping gear, Mike’s stove exploded into a nice big flame. No stove meant no coffee to get us going at 4:00 a.m., so the stove got fixed. In the dark. We were both impressed and relieved.

May 13 turned out to be the sweet spot when a few outgoing waterfowl and shorebirds lingered and incoming songbirds were starting to ramp up. So even though birds weren’t plentiful, we managed to find 133 species during our 24-hour blitz. This included 15 species we had not seen during our 2017 & 2018 birdathons, bringing our three-year total to 161 species. A wonderful testament to the value of the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway to migrant and breeding birds.

Notes and highlights from the day:

  • Wyalusing was thin on warblers but heavy with catbirds and brown thrashers
  • Good look at the yellow-throated warbler in the pines (endangered in WI, at northern edge of range)
  • The warbler hotspot was on County C on the south side of the river – including a Canada warbler
  • The field at the Millville Unit-Russell Hill that is normally a bobolink bonanza was corn stubble instead of grass – not a bird to be found there
  • Saw probably 6-8 red-headed woodpeckers along the way – so great to see them increasing
  • Limpa bread with geitost (pronounced yay-toast) cheese and pickled herring were oh so good for lunch, along with lefse of course
  • Bobwhite at Mazo Bottoms!
  • Flooded field near Tri-County Airport that had Wilson’s phalaropes three days earlier was surrounded by fields being planted, so no birds
  • Cattail marsh across the road, though, was a chorus of continuous soras (!)
  • Explored more nooks and crannies of the incredibly beautiful Lower Wisconsin State Riverway -- what a gem and what great foresight to preserve & enhance it forever

Species of Concern that we found in the Riverway (bolded names are species of concern at the federal level):

Endangered:  yellow-throated warbler

ThreatenedHenslow’s sparrow, Cerulean warbler

Special Concern:  Northern bobwhite, American woodcock, common nighthawk, whip-poor-will, red-headed woodpecker, least flycatcher, purple martin, ruby-crowned kinglet, golden-winged warbler, prothonotary warbler, vesper sparrow, lark sparrow, bobolink, eastern meadowlark, Brewer’s blackbird.

It takes a village to care for the birds that matter so much to our lives and our world. The Birdathon is all about rallying together on their behalf. Our sincere thanks to our team’s supporters!
