$1,540.00Raised

Welcome to our Great Wisconsin Birdathon page! We are excited to participate in this statewide effort to raise $100,000 for bird conservation.

Our team consists of three conservation-minded moms, Hannah Spaul, Leslie Schroeder and Kim Kreitinger, and our bird-loving chicks Oscar (age 10), Maple (age 8), Anders (age 7) and Sylvia (age 5). We conducted our Birdathon on May 6, a warm, sunny, and unfortunately, not particularly birdy day. Most of the migrants that had arrived earlier in the week had already departed, and a fresh wave of migrating birds would not be arriving until another weather front moved through.

Nevertheless, our crew was eager and we did manage to record almost 30 species in an hour’s walk. We followed the shoreline of Lake Monona in Madison from Yahara Park to Hudson Park, and then looped back to Circle Park, and finally ended our walk at the Chocolate Shoppe for ice cream.

The highlight for most (besides the ice cream!) was being able to see a female Cooper’s Hawk incubating her eggs at Circle Park, and then watching her mate fly into a nearby tree. As we watched, the male then went into attack mode and chased a hapless squirrel around the tree trunk. The kids were a bit disappointed that the squirrel escaped – our bunch would not have been bothered by a little "circle of life" gore.

Here is our list of birds seen (in no particular order):

Mallard                                              American Coot                        Barn Swallow

N. Rough-winged Swallow            Double-crested Cormorant   Ring-billed Gull

Eastern Kingbird                             American Crow                      American Robin

Black-capped Chickadee                Blue-gray Gnatcatcher          Palm Warbler

European Starling                           White-breasted Nuthatch     Chipping Sparrow

Red-winged Blackbird                    Northern Cardinal                 Common Grackle

Brown-headed Cowbird                 House Finch                            American Goldfinch

House Sparrow                                Chimney Swift                         Downy Woodpecker

House Wren                                      Ruby-crowned Kinglet          Yellow Warbler

Yellow-rumped Warbler

It is not too late to support our team with a pledge or donation.  The Great Wisconsin Birdathon has raised over $300,000 for Wisconsin's birds since 2012! We have done so much, but there is still so much more to do. Thank you for joining us in making a sustainable future for Wisconsin's birds!
